About John B. Palmerton, 64, Vicksburg, Miss., formerly of Springfield, died at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center on February 15, 2006, of cancer. Services were held on Saturday, February 18, 2006, at Glenwood Funeral Home in Vicksburg. John was born May 8, 1941, to Roger and Corrine (French) Palmerton, who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Hillcrest High School and received a degree in Physics from the University of Missouri at Rolla. He moved to Vicksburg, Miss., and joined the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Waterways Experiment Station in 1967. He received his Master’s degree in Engineering at the University of California, Berkley, in 1971. He was married for 38 years to Karen Allen of St. Louis, Mo., who also preceded him in death. John retired from the Corps of Engineers in 1997 and was the owner of Geosynthetic Applications Simulations. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Vicksburg, where he sang in the choir and played handbells. He played the violin with the St. Joseph, Louisiana, symphony orchestra, and was active in other community organizations. Survivors include a son, John Allen Palmerton, and his wife, Angela, of Madison, Miss.; two daughters, Diana Howell and husband, John, of Jackson, Miss., and Lesley Dill and husband, Wayne, of Ridgeland, Miss.; four grandchildren, Haley, Walker, and Harrison Palmerton, and Payton Dill; one brother, Fred Palmerton and wife, Rae Jean of Springfield; three sisters, Ann Pemstein and husband, Ron, of Tucson, Ariz., Mary White and husband, John, of Independence, Mo., and Jo Lynne Palmerton, Springfield; one uncle, Earl French, Jr., and wife, Donna, of Westminster, Calif.; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. John will be remembered for his generosity and wonderful sense of humor, and for his devotion to his three children.
