About Springfield Sergeant Dies In Vietnam Vehicle Mishap

Another Springfield Soldier, Sgt. Richard Lee Tatum, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude O. Tatum, 1324 South Prince Lane, has died in Vietnam. Sgt. Tatum was killed Tuesday when the military vehicle in which he was riding hit a soft shoulder in a road near Chu Lai and overturned, it was learned today. The combat engineer was with a group moving heaving construction equipment at the time of the accident. A graduate of Hillcrest High School, Sgt. Tatum took basic Army training at Ft. Leonard Wood and began a year of Vietnam duty in January. He was promoted posthumously to sergeant E5. Surviving besides his parents are two sisters, Mr. John Pearce, 2739 East Lombard, and Claudine, of the home; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Tiller, 2069 North Lexington. The body will be returned for services and burial under the direction of Klingner. [Spfd News Leader dated August 9, 1968]

Funeral services for Sgt. Richard Lee Tatum, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude O. Tatum, 1324 South Prince Lane, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Klingner Chapel with the Rev.Eli Routh officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery with military rites. Sgt. Tatum was killed August 6 in Vietnam when the truck in which he was riding overturned. [Spfd News Leader dated 16 Aug 1968]
