About Martha Ann Wells Thompson, 84, Springfield, MO., died at 4:50 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in St. John's Regional Health Center.
She was born Sept. 11, 1914, in Marshfield, Mo., to the late Daniel L. and Iris Clay Wells. The family moved to Springfield in 1926. Martha graduated from Greenwood High School and SMS. She did graduate work at the University of Colorado, the New York University, and the Missouri University. In 1945 she received her Master's degree in Guidance and Education from the Northwestern University. In 1936 she joined the Springfield Public School System starting as a permanent substitute. She later taught in Pepperdine and Tefft elementary schools then was asked to transfer to Pipkin Junior High School, where in addition to teach some classes, she served as Curriculum Coordinator. When Hillcrest High School was opened in 1958, she was asked to transfer to Hillcrest to serve as Dean of Girls. Later that position was changed to Administrative Assistant, the current title is Assistant Principal. Martha served two summers as Dean of Women at SMSU.
Martha had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1941. She had been involved in youth work and had been president of United Methodist Women. She organized the Young Adult Bible Class. She had held offices in the fine arts department of Sorosis Women's Club, where she had been a member over 50 years. She had been president of The Salvation Army Auxiliary, and a member of St. John's Hospital Auxiliary, where she had worked for 16 years in Surgery Waiting.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth L. Thompson, whom she married Jul 21, 1983; a step-son, Lawrence E. Thompson, Springfield; three step-grandchildren, Kenton and Julie Thompson, Orlando, Fla., and Elizabeth Geurink, Tampa, Fla.; and six step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. James R. Kellett officiating under the care of Gorman-Scharph Brentwood Chapel. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. No formal visitation is scheduled, however, friends may call after 1 p.m. today in the funeral home.
