About Oberbeck, Fred, 57: Freddie Joe Oberbeck, son of Dale Lloyd and Mary Louise Owens Oberbeck, was born October 7, 1951 in Marshfield, Missouri and departed this life June 5, 2009 in St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield, Missouri at the age of fifty-seven years, seven months and twenty-eight days. On March 29, 1980 he was united in marriage to Gwen Clark and to this union two daughters were born. He was preceded in death by his father, his step-father, Leroy Baxter Sr.; two half-brothers, Dana & Terry Baxter; his mother-in-law, Hazel Clark, who held a very special place in his heart; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Vinson, who was always sure to keep him on the straight and narrow. Fred is survived by his loving wife, Gwen of the home; two daughters, Tracy Davis and husband Jason of Mansfield, Missouri and Laurel Oberbeck of Springfield, Missouri; three grandchildren, Liam, Trinnity and Kellar; his mother, Louise Baxter of Highlandville, Missouri; three brothers, Jimmy Oberbeck and wife Dorothy of Scammon, Kansas, Jerry Oberbeck and wife Jane of DeSoto, Missouri and August Oberbeck and wife Jackie of Port Lavaca, Texas; a sister, Kathy Detherage and husband Bob of Carl Junction, Missouri; a half-brother, Leroy “Bud” Baxter, Jr. of Highlandville, Missouri as well as a host of other relatives and many friends. He was born in Marshfield and grew up in Springfield where he graduated from Hillcrest High School in the class of 1969. After graduating he entered the United States Army where he served in both Germany and Vietnam where he served in the Army Signal Core as a top secret crypto radio operator. He achieved the highest degree of clearance from the U.S. Army and while serving he was injured and later received the prestigious Purple Heart as well as many other honorable medals. After returning from war, he drove a truck for Foremost Dairy for 8 years and then for Interstate Brands Corporation for 22 years.

Fred was a member of Clarence King Post #128 of the American Legion, Mansfield Masonic Lodge #543 and Scottish Rite Valley of Joplin. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening with his grandson Liam, Canadian fishing trips, playing baseball, darts, marbles with his grandkids.
But the most important thing to Fred was his family. He loved his family dearly and was especially protective of his daughters when they were growing up and was anticipating the arrival of another granddaughter. Fred had to live with the afflictions of war but overcame that to be a great husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. So now we must say goodbye to Freddie Joe but we take comfort knowing his war is finally over.
