Graduation Year Class of 1966
Date of Passing Aug 04, 1999
About Lauren Nance died Aug. 4, 1999, of complications arising from brain cancer. Her husband, Don Nance [Blood], her mother, Wilma Nance, her brother, John Nance, and their families survive Lauren. Lauren was born April 6, 1948, in Springfield. She was student body vice-president at Hillcrest High School. She earned bachelors and masters degrees in education from Southwest Missouri State University. She taught biology at Jarrett Junior High and was a counselor at Reed Junior High, Center High School and Glendale High School. She served the Springfield Public School system for 28 years with persona integrity and professional competence. Lauren was sensitive to natural beauty. She loved the outdoors, the mountains and the sea. She loved and cared for animals. She loved her family and her friends and cared about people. She traveled widely and lived well. She was, and she believed that she was, a part of all that she had met. Lauren was active and physically fit. She approached recreation with enthusiasm and determination. She biked and ran and hiked many miles. She took up mountaineering, and climbed every major peak in the Teton Range of Wyoming. She did not climb to conquer mountains, but for the joy of being among them. Years ago, when climbing the Grand Teton, Lauren encountered difficulty in passing through a place called "the eye of the needle." She said to her companions that she was panicked. Then she worked through that place and climbed five more hours through harder places to the summit. That experience was a model for the last few months of her life. Lauren's memory will be honored at a private memorial service under direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. In lieu of flowers, she wised that contribution be sent to the Southwest Missouri Humane Society, 3161 West Norton Road, or the American Brain Tumor Association, 2720 River Road, Des Plaines, IL. 60018.
