About Hoyt Shumate Dies at 67 / First Principal of Hillcrest High

Hoyt P. Shumate, 67, first principal of Hillcrest High School, who retired in 1966, died at noon Saturday of a heart attack at this home in Laguana Hills, Calif. Mr. Shumate collapsed in the yard outside his residence in Leisure World, a retirement community, Mrs. Shumate told Springfield Schools Supt. Willard J. Graff, a friend of long standing. %uFFFDHe was an excellent educator, and a man you like to call your friend.%uFFFD Graff commented Saturday night. %uFFFDMr. Shumate left an abiding impression on his associates and the students who went to school under him.%uFFFD

Graff talked by telephone with Mrs. Shumate after learning of her husband%uFFFDs death. Mr. Shumate, who joined the Springfield public school system in 1953, moved with his wife to California shortly after retiring on July 1, 1966. He suffered from a heart condition for some years, having had his first attack while still serving as Hillcrest Principal. The stadium at that high school, which was opened 1958, is named for Mr. Shumate. A graduate of Southwest Missouri State College, Mr. Shumate earned his master%uFFFDs degree in education from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He grew up in the Humansville area. Mr. Shumate began his teaching career in 1921 in Preston and subsequently served as superintendent at Cross Timbers, Strafford, Blue Springs and Mansfield. For several years he worked with the State Department of Education.

He left the education field for a time and was a field representative for MFA when he was persuaded to return to the teaching profession by Supt. Graff to become principal of Portland elementary school when it opened in 1953. After a year there Mr. Shumate served for four years as principal of Pipkin Junior High School prior to being appointed in 1958 to the principalship of new Hillcrest High School. Mr. Shumate was succeeded in that position when he retired by William Gist. Mr. Shumate was a member of the Downtown Lions Club and First and Calvary Presbyterian Church here. He is survived by his wife, Leta; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Linda) Jones of Anaheim, Calif., and two granddaughters. The body is being returned to Springfield for funeral services and burial under direction of Klingners. [Source: Spfd News Leader dated February 15, 1970]

Funeral services for Hoyt P. Shumate, 67, first principal at Hillcrest High School, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Klingner Chapel with Dr. William E. Everheart officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Shumate died at noon Saturday of a heart attack at his home in Laguna Hills, Calif. Donations may be made to the heart fund.
