About George Clinton Newton Jr. was born in Springfield, Mo., to George Clinton and Beulah Mae (Fulton) Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. George is survived by sons, Todd of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Eagle of the home; a sister, Judy Newton; grandchildren, Andrew and Sarah Newton of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and several nephews and nieces. He lost a courageous two year battle in St. John's Hospital early Sunday morning, after an extensive battle with respiratory problems. George was a member of the first graduating class from Hillcrest High School in 1959. He loved playing football in high school and college. George was on the winning SMS Football Bears that went to the Mineral Bowl. He was known as a coach, teacher and avid quail hunter. His teaching and coaching career began in Miller, Mo., in 1965. He furthered his education and earned his Master's from Central Missouri State. He then taught and coached in Lebanon, Mo. George moved back to Springfield after completing his Specialist Degree, and joined the teaching and coaching staff of Springfield R-12. He actively coached football at Parkview, Hillcrest, Central and Glendale. The 1989 Hillcrest Hornets, called the Doctors of Defense, had an outstanding defensive year under his guidance. George was named "Coach of the Year" from the Pepsi Cola/Sports Journal that year. George loved quail hunting with bird dogs and spent many years raising champion English setters. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge about the sport and wrote many articles for American Field Magazine. Many life long friends survive George. A special "Thanks" to each for their support during these past two years. He enthusiastically coached football and shared life lessons with many young men. His career had a span of over 40 years. His face would light up and those blue eyes would sparkle when he heard someone call out, "Hi Coach!" Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008, in First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, 820 E. Cherry. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 6 p.m., before the service. Under the direction of Shadel's Colonial Chapel of Lebanon. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Willard, Mo., at a later date. The family wants to thank the staff at Missouri Rehab, Mt. Vernon, Mo. They helped George attend Eagle's graduation. Online condolences at www.shadelscolonialchapel.com.
