Pfc. Eddie Brooks, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Brooks, 2317 North Travis, died Tuesday in Vietnam of wounds he received May 14, according to information received by his family. While working as a carrier for Springfield Newspapers, Inc., Brooks established a record of throwing all the newspapers on his route for one year with only one miss. He was the winter 11 out of 12 months for being the best carrier and received a savings bond for each of the months. His paper route was taken over by his brother at the time he left for the Army, but a newspaper official said today Brooks had been promised a job with Springfield Newspapers, Inc. upon his return. A close friend of the boy, state Representative Ed (Doc) Groves, said today he is introducing a resolution in the Missouri House on young Brooks' behalf. Groves said, "Eddie was my paper boy. I can't tell you what a fine boy he was ." According to his mother, he was wounded on the 14th by gunfire from an Army gunship that mistook his combat group for enemy soldiers. The attack took place during an artillery combat operation near Phu Bai, Vietnam. He died in an Army hospital while receiving treatment. His mother said he had been wounded on March 27 by a hand grenade, but had returned to duty after treatment. She said today she learned he had been wounded on two other occasions, but didn't want her informed because it would worry her. Surviving besides his parents, are three brothers, Stephen, Arthur and James, all of the home; and a sister, Mrs. Virginia Swain, Decatur, Ga. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
