Favorite School Memory | Choir rehearsals, performances, competitions, and bus tours. Hi-Y activities -- snowshoe trips to Ely, venison meals, outings with Y-Teens, and broom ball. Skating parties, sock hops on Mr. Matson's floor, and get-togethers at friends' homes. The Tradewinds with Ruben Ristrom and Jim Maher -- we cut a record (it didn't sell). And, the Senior Skip Day canoe trip with Bruce Hanson, Dieter Eckert, and John Wilkus. Then, there were the class-time memories involving Chickie Tack... Miss Seng... Mr. Ahlquist ("No one has a monopoly on the Truth!")... Mr. Knowlton ("First thing you do when you get out of school is take out a loan, then pay it back quickly -- establish credit!")... Miss McCarthy's zany German Labs... and the wonderful and gifted Gar Lockrem. We owe a lot to Gar. ...(read more) |
About Me | Married high school sweetheart. Fathered two delightful daughters -- Christine is an MD; Cindy's an Architect. Earned degrees in Physics, Math, Statistics (MS; UD, 19 74), and Science & Technology (PhD; GMU, 2000). Dissertation dealt with Information Warfare and Counter-terrorism. Served as a Defense Scientist at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. Rose through the ranks to Branch Chief and Division Chief in the Armored Systems Div, WSMR, and to Director of Research, TRADOC Systems Analysis Agency at White Sands Missile Range. Then, spent six years in the defense industry (Honeywell Precision Weapons, MPLS) as a Senior Engineer before being called to Washington D.C. to serve in the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA: SECDEF's personal think tank -- a "half-way" house, replete with Generals, Admirals, and former and future executive civil servants). Projects took me often to W. Germany and the UK, to Canada, Australia, Korea, and the Middle East. Hosted a defense meeting at Nixon's Western White House during Watergate. Chaired NATO and other international defense working groups and served on the Defense Science Board. Served, worked along side, and played dice at Happy Hours with incredible soldiers and airmen, some of whom fought under Patton or in the Battle of the Bulge, and on Porkchop Hill. One was interviewed by Michner for a book. Another was an RAF fighter pilot in WW II. As he took me to high tea at our ancestral home on England's South Coast, this relative revealed that he was home on leave from Africa, sitting on a hillside overlooking Plymouth Harbor the morning D-Day kicked off and had not a clue... thought it was all a drill. That's Security!! Have lived in 10 states and overseas, and met fascinating people along the way, including Viscount Allenby, Count de la Valdene, the Huxleys, an astronaut, and the man who REALLY fired MacCarthur. Was fortunate to work for a brilliant National Treasure who also became a great mentor. Retired in 2002 to the Colorado Springs area. S...(read more) |
