He was a research scientist for 30 years for the USDA Forest Service, serving the latter years as director of the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center and as an adjunct Professor of Forestry at Purdue University. When not working, he enjoyed cooking, gardening, and fishing. He died from the effects of a brain tumor. His wife, Karen Temple Michler, died by suicide in July 2015.
