David W. Clark
Class of 1963
Air Force, 3 Years
Worked in Air Freight. Loaded airplanes on Okinawa then went into "load planning". Used my brain instead of my brawn. After 18 months on the small island of Okinawa, I went to Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Vietnam for a year. Was there for the Tet offensive but being in the Air Force, mostly went about my business. We did get hit by rockets quite a few times with one hitting right outside where i was working. That rocket hit right in the cockpit of a C-130 cargo plane destroying it completely!!! Others that night hit a quonset hut church, a barracks, and movie house!!! All were destroyed.Scary but still we were not out in the bush fighting like the Army and Marines!!! I did get to a small base about a mile from Cambodia. Lots of talk about VC coming in from Cambodia the night we spent there but it did not happen. 2 weeks later the base was overrun by about a thousand North Vietnamese troops. Glad we were not there that night or i would not be writing this now.
Mostly, though, we were safe being in the Air Force. Made Sergeant while in Vietnam.
After Vietnam asked for and got assigned to Travis AFB in Fairfield. Got to come home often being so close!!! Got offered an "early out" so left the Air Force after 3 years and 4 months instead of the full 4 years. So glad to be home with family and friends!!! Two of my best friends were also in Vietnam. Ken Sandall was in the Marines and was their most of 1967. Larry Valenzin was there early, 1965, I think. Glad to say they got back ok and we are still good friends today!!!

Vernon G. Wittkopp
Class of 1956
Air Force, 20+ Years
I entered the USAF as an Airman, became a Commissioned Officer and Navigator. I went through advanced Nav. School, and then went to SC. to fly Weather Recon. I ended up being sent to the PI & Viet Nam. I was in 188.5 combat missions in the B57, including a midair over the South China Sea. I was picked up by an HH43 Chopper with help from a PJ from San Mateo County. Back to the US, as an Instructor Nav. Five years later off to a B53H squadron with a TDY to Guam & Thailand, and more mission over VN. Back to Mather as a Sgt. to retire as a Captain. Oh well at least I got back did retire.
