Chief Warrant Officer-4 David Carter was killed when a U.S. Chinook helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan on 6 August 2011. The helicopter was ferrying a group of Navy SEALs to reinforce a group of Army Rangers who were under fire. It was deadliest single loss for U.S. forces in the decade-long war. David was a 1982 graduate of Hays High School.
