| About Me | Phelan Fretz is the principal at Fretz Consulting Services, a leadership and organization development consulting practice. His work is grounded in 35 years of leadership in the museum industry and is informed by his Noyce Leadership Fellowship and the Appreciative Inquiry strength-based change model. He serves as an executive coach to nonprofit leaders affecting change; works to sustainably transform museums through his consultancy, and facilitates two Museum Directors Roundtables serving medium-sized museums from across New England representing art, science, and history. He recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Museum Association for his leadership. Clients include nonprofit executives, boards of nonprofits as well as emerging and seasoned leaders. Prior to founding his consulting practice, Phelan spent a career in museum leadership. He is a long-time science educator and has held leadership positions at the New England Aquarium in Boston, Philadelphia’s Academy of Natural Sciences, and Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. He was named Founding Executive Director of ECHO Science and Nature Museum in 2002 and opened the new Burlington Vermont Waterfront LEED certified, regional STEM facility in 2003. As ECHO’s Founding Director, he took a fledgling science center with 4 staff and a $300K budget to a thriving $4.5M operation serving 170,000 annual guests. He transformed governance from a small working Board to a policy, governance, and fundraising Board. By raising nearly $40M in operating and capital support, he expanded the facility, built a $10M endowment, and refreshed the daily experience with over 60 exhibits in 20 years. Attaining “cherished community asset” status was achieved through a statewide access program that removed cultural, financial, and geographic barriers to museum visitation. Dr. Fretz received a B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, an M.S. in Conservation Biology, an M.Ed. in Community Education, and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of California, Davis. His board leadership includes the Burlington Business Association, Burlington Early Learning Initiative, Vermont Clean Water Network, and the New England Museum Association.
