Favorite School Memory My favorite high school memory would have to be just hanging out with friends. We all had many great times, but to pick one I would be hard pressed. Not only to remember but to be able to limit it to just one memory. I remember we always had great pep rallies and locker maids would fillour lockers with goodies ...(read more)
About Me I feel that I have a lot of close relationships with most of you. It’s kind of funny that as I look over all of the profiles and read some of the stories I realized that I know and had personal ties with almost everyone in this class. I moved from Norfolk to Hastings the summer before we started High School. That summer I was 15 and spent it in Kodiak Alaska with my Uncle. I went through my High School years in Hastings while staying in touch with many of my friends in Norfolk through sports mostly and for other reasons occasionally. I had a great High School experience there and had very similar experiences as most of you. Graduated from High School, went to work for the Rail Road, got laid off, went to the University of Nebraska Lincoln, spent all of my savings and had way to big of a class load so I quit (left) school after one semester to make some money out in the world. I worked for the Rail Road for a while then had a tiff with one of the supervisors and moved on, drilled water wells for a while, worked construction, moved back to Norfolk when my parents moved back, worked construction jobs around town. I was only back for a short while when I received a job offer from Shell to work on an offshore oil rig in Galveston Texas. So I was getting ready to leave and ran into Mic Moore, I was telling him about heading out to Texas and he told me he was going to Utah to work for NUCOR. So we talked about it and decide that Utah was kind of on the way to Texas so he sold his car we packed up my Pontiac Bonneville (I bought from Shafer for $500) and headed out. We spent the next ten years in Utah helping build and then working for NUCOR Steel. While I lived in Logan Utah we had a fairly large group of us that came from Norfolk. For me it was like a homecoming after going to High School in Hastings. We had several Hoffman’s including Ron, Mic Moore, Jeff Moore, Al Wentling and several more people from Norfolk. It was a great time in my life and I married my wife April there in Paradise Utah In 1988.Shortly after that I started to get a bit bored with working in the Mill. We went on a vacation to visit my Uncle in Alaska. We ended up going out on his boat and commercial fishing for halibut. When we returned to Utah I think I had already decided that we would move to Alaska and be commercial fishermen. I told my plan to my wife and she said “are you out of your mind?” So we moved to Yakutat Alaska in 1989 bought some fishing boats and permits and went fishing. I didn’t know much about it when I started, but I did find out that I would get deathly sea sick when ever I would go out on the Ocean. (Whoop’s didn’t think about that) I still had to fish because I just spent every penny we had to get into it. So I fished for Halibut, Salmon, Crab and Shrimp. Also I hired the boat out to haul things for other people. We made great money for the first six or seven years then the halibut regulations changed and we went from catching 80,000 lbs a year to being allowed to catch only 3,000 lbs a year. That was pretty much the end of my fishing career, I do still have some permits and a couple of boats but very seldom go out any more. What an adventure that was. I had to come back to shore and get a real job. I started out just doing construction jobs and made a fair living at it. We started talking about moving on when I landed a job at the local power plant. I was the president of the Utility Board when we hired a new manager, he was retired from a big corporate mining company and was used to having his way. I went to see him one day and found out that he had fired the accounting firm that we running the plant and was trying to keep up by himself. I noticed that he hadn’t been keeping any books or paying any payroll taxes. When I asked him about it he didn’t know he was supposed to (he was just hand writing checks out of the account for invoices and payroll). So I started to help him get the plant in order in my spare time soon it turned into a full time job, and that is what I am up to now. Ten years into being a power plant manager. I’m still married to April and have two daughters that we adopted from one of her Niece’s that was having a troubled life. Sarah now 11 and Danielle now 7, they are the center of my life now and I feel that I missed out on many years of having children. What a great ride so far I can only hope that all of you are having as good of or a better time than I am. How’s that for a brief profile? To all...(read more)
