1979/1980 Basketball Team

Class of 1980

I felt the need to contact you in regards to the 1979 and 1980 Basketball team that played at Harbor 30 years ago. This team is still talked about today as the best ever that played at Harbor and the best that Santa Cruz County has ever seen. Three of those players were voted as the top ten best that ever played at Harbor. No other team had more than one player voted in. Buzzy Butler, Adam Goldberg and Chris Raiser are those three players. What is amazing is Steve Carle was the MVP of this team voted in by his fellow players.

No other team in history has had a guard combo as they did. Both Adam and Chris were Co-MVP’s of 1980. That team was athletic, big, fast, quick and could shoot and score a lot of points. I enjoyed watching them they had the confidence that when they played a team they knew they were going to win and do anything to win.

That team in two years only lost one-league game 19 wins and 1 loss in two years of league play. I believe that who ever did the voting for the 25th anniversary team had to put Buzzy, Adam and Chris on it but also Steve Carle and Pat McQullin could have been on that 25th anniversary team as well. But they could not have half of the top ten coming from one team.

This team Harbor High needs to Honor it is way past due. Harbor should Honor the entire team. The perfect time is when they have their 30th anniversary of when all these guys graduated which will be next year.

I also feel you should retire # 13 and # 22. Adam # 13 and Chris # 22. These two Co-MVP’s were so good that no one could stop them. Adam was so quick and fast and Chris was and is the best shooter I have ever seen, and I bet the best Harbor has ever seen. They both seem to know where they were at all times. Both great athletes and very tough guys that did not back down.

I was at the last game they played against Mt. Pleasant who was 25 – 0. Back then there were no divisions. This was for the CCS and Harbor had them and should have won that game. But one of referee's took that game away from those boys. If you go back and read about that game it was taken from them and they never played together again. It was a very sad ending to see such a great bunch of guys who loved playing together and loved to play.
