After graduating from HBSHS in 1956 I enrolled at Northwestern University and remained there for a BS in Engineering Science and a PhD in Materials Science. Ellen Armstead also of the class of 1956 and I were married on 9/3/1960. In 1966 I began a 30 year career in electrical and optical materials at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington MA. Following that I contracted with The US Air Force to continue research mainly on Indium Phosphide crystals that are used for optical fiber communications around the world. We have 3 children; Steven in AR, David in MA and Laura in NC. One of our five grandchildren is graduating from U of GA vet school in May, another graduated from Clemson in architecture, a third will enroll at American U in DC and the other two are 15 and 8 years old. We live in Florida for about 9 months each year and at Cape Cod in the summer. Tennis is my favorite pastime now; I play up to 5 times a week. Ellen and I also play golf (poorly) and love to play bridge and to travel. After being given “no chance” our 60th anniversary looms!

Ellen and I would have loved to attend the 60th anniversary of our graduation but with traveling to GA for a graduation and then to MA for another and to Harbor Beach, MI and leaving for Europe with out 15 year old grandson all within a month is just too much. We have given each grandchild a European tour when they reach about 15 and hope to return to take the last one in another 7 years or so.
