memories

The mention of Coach Suey Eason brought back memories. In 1952, I worked for Coach Suey Eason during school hours. Because I was able to take shorthand, he chose me to help write his story. His plan was to write a book, but because I got married not long after graduation, and left Virginia, I don't know if he ever wrote the book. Later, after graduation, I worked for him during the summer when he was athletic director (I think ) for the City of Hampton. I stayed in the office all day to answer the phone, and in the afternoon, he and his co-workers would bring in notes from activies around the area parks, and I would write articles to be purblished in the newspaper. For that, I got paid. :-)
Anyway, he was a very good boss/teacher and I have fond memories of him.

Hampton History

three names that made Hampton History:
Raymond Charles Lewis '32, one of the best football players of Hampton.
Coach Suey Eason, comparable to Coach Mike Smith - it would be a good game if their best teams played each other.
Ann Mitchell Lewis, bus driver 17 years, play ground director Mallory, Recreation Dept Arts and Crafts under Suey Eason.

Hunt For Hampton History 2009

The 2009 Hunt for Hampton History will focus on the history of our schools and educators who have influenced the course of Education in Hampton.

In conjunction with the Hampton 400 Oral History Project, we are looking for teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, principals, superintendents, bus drivers, school nurses, attendance secretaries, maintenance staff, cafeteria staff, librarians, etc who hold a place in your memory. Our intention is to find and recognize people who have made a difference (small or large) through Hampton City Schools and Hampton’s private schools.

If you would like to share a quick memory about an educator, please submit the memory, the educator’s name, and the school where the memory took place to emcmahon@hampton.gov. So often employees are not given opportunities for recognition, especially those in administrative, staff, and maintenance roles. Please share your stories so we have an opportunity to thank our schools for all they do.

For more information or ways that you can participate in the Hunt for Hampton History, please contact 757-726-5437

After Prom 2008

The HHS PTSA's After -prom committee is in need of financial and/or in-kind donations to help out with the After Prom. The After Prom is an alcohol- and drug-free event sponsered by the PTSA that is held after the prom from 12 am to 4:30 am. It includes games, contests, prizes and other fun activities. Food and drinks are also served. Basically we are providing a safe alternative for the graduating Senior Class. The celebration is held at no cost for the student with the After- Prom committee covering all expenses. Last year the After-Prom was very sucessful and we would like that to continue. The event this year will be held May 2-3 at the Hampton YMCA. If any alumni or alumni class would like to donate please contact Daphne Darden (PTSA President) by phone at 728-1912 or email her at DKMDARDEN@earthlink.net
