"Big E" AKA Elliot Levin was the 1965 Hami High Basketball "Legend" who, along with Sidney Wicks, Tommy Line, Albert Shumate, Bruce Ziskin, Rod Delson, Robert Newnam, Chico Schwartz, and a few others all followed Coach Shimizu up to but not all the way to the L.A. City Championships at the Inglewood Forum that devastating evening. The Hami Team bumped into the Jefferson High School Democrats who dominated the basketball scene of Los Angeles Southern League before taking on the Western League Champion Hamilton Yankees. Jefferson was just too much for Hami to overcome that frigid evening. The game was played on the Forum floor over the hockey ice of a few nights prior. Elliot, the Red Headed Wonder, was following in his brothers footsteps. Murray Levin and Rich Levin who ended up LA City Player of the year before sitting on the bench for two seasons as part of two John Wooden UCLA National Championships. Rich became a reporter for the Herald Express before working for MLB Commissioner Peter Ueberroth and staying in the corporate offices of MLB for close to 30 years. Elliot Levin was THE MAN at Hami High School. We remember him well.

Elliot Levin was not a friend of mine. We socialized in different circles, but he was one who inspired me, while inspiring all students of Hamilton High. I am saddened by his passing, which I learned about just now. We shared the same age, which makes his passing more personal. At 76, my memories of Hami are fading, some friends and acquaintances I cannot recall, as my number of friends was small, but Elliot always stood out. We had never met, but I mourn for him.
