David Hammerstein
Class of 1973
David Hammerstein, who was an activist even during his years at Hamilton, is currently a member of the European Parliament representing Spain, and on several committees including delegation for relations with Israel. At Hamilton, he was a writer for a student newspaper that caused controversy because it contained information about birth control. David also worked with the United Farm Workers and Cesar Chavez struggle for human rights. While attending UC Santa Cruz, where he graduated with the highest honors in Sociology, he organized demonstrations against apartheid in South Africa. Upon graduation ,he traveled to Spain to teach English. After meeting his future Spanish wife,he created k-12 English Immersion school, became active in his neighborhood revitalization movement, and went on to became a member of the Green Party, who put him up as their candidate. After his first year in the Parliament, he was nominated by the Spanish Press as most valuable political leader of the year.
