Rosario M. Rausa, CAPT (Ret.)

Education: B.A. in English, Middlebury College, Vermont (1957)

Rosario M. Rausa has been editor of Wings of Gold, the voice of the Association of Naval Aviation, since retirement from active duty in the Navy in 1988. Wings of Gold is a quarterly, 80-page publication with a circulation of approximately 12,000, including all aviation units, ashore and afloat, in the Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard, plus key offices in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and all Congressional offices. Other duties include administering the association’s awards program, which recognizes outstanding performances by active duty personnel.

Skills and Experience: Veteran of 30 years military service as a Naval Aviator.
Author or co-author of six non-fiction books on aviation subjects (Gold Wings, Blue Sea; Combat Aircraft Designer (with Ed Heinemann); Combat Aircraft Design (with Ed Heinemann); The Blue Angels: An Illustrated History; The Flying Dump Truck (A-1 Skyraider); Tempting Fate (autobiography of test pilot Bob Rahn); and R.G. Smith – the Man and His Art (autobiography of artist R.G. Smith). He also wrote Mogy (with Alan Mogensen), the autobiography of the man considered the father of Work Simplification in the U.S.; and in conjunction with the Charles Cunningham family, co-wrote Putty and Bess, the memoirs of RADM A.C. Read, the commander of the first flight to cross the Atlantic (1919) and Mrs. Bess Read. Has been writing the Grampaw Pettibone aviation safety column for Naval Aviation News magazine since 1985.

While on active duty he was Associate Editor of Naval Aviation News magazine for two years as a lieutenant, editor of the magazine for over six years as a commander, and served two years as Head, Aviation Periodicals and History Office.
He retired as a captain.
He logged 4,400 hours of flight time and 500 carrier landings.
He also flew 150 combat missions in Vietnam, flying the A-1 Skyraider.
