About | Frank was born in San Diego, graduated from Grossmont High School in 1962 and joined the Air Force in 1963. He was stationed in many places in the US and also Germany, Turkey, and spent two months on a Navy ship. Most of his time in the service was spent at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX. He was a Basic Military training instructor, for individuals entering the Air Force, or basic training as it was referred to from 1974 to 1983. Frank loved being a MTI, as they were called, each and every one of the trainees he trained was treated the same. He believed that he could teach them all as long as they were willing to listen to his instruction. The last five years of his military career was spent as a First Sergeant. His job as a First Sargent, in his words, was to make his commander look good. So he was responsible for the MTI’s getting their jobs done the right way so the squadron was running smoothly. He did this well because he was trusted and known to have the best interests of all involved as his goal. He retired in February 1989 and went to work for an insurance company for the next 13 years. He retired in San Antonio, Texas. Frank enjoyed playing golf, working as a Marshall at the Dominion where he met quite a few famous people, such as George Strait. He liked traveling and was able to go to Scotland and Ireland. Of course he played golf while in both places. He continued to be a big sports fan although more as a spectator at this point. He loved his family and would travel to spend time with the ones that didn’t live in the San Antonio area. If you know anything about him he never met a stranger and would talk to anyone. He has a saying, “it is all in who you know”, so you should get to know people. He stayed in touch with many of his friends from BMT and they would get together a couple of times a month and have breakfast. Once a year Frank would attend the Blue Rope Ball which is a special get together for the MTI’s that had earned the distinguished Blue Rope. Frank is survived by his wife of 59 years, Brenda, and three daughters: Tammy Tilleman and her husband Walter, Debra Olson and her husband John Lang, Michele Armitage and her husband Charles. He has five grandchildren Anna Marijka, Steven, Cassidy, Mason, and Armwell; his brother Pete and his wife Pam, niece Taylor and nephew Ryder. |
