Mens Alumni B-Ball Results - 3

On paper, the final pairing between 04 and 00-01 appeared to be a great match-up. Unfortunately, playing 5 straight games on Saturday took a tremendous toll on the 04 squad. With 2 of 7 players cramping up throughout the 1st half, it became a one-sided affair, and 04 forfeited the remainder of the championship match-up. For the 2nd straight year the 2000-2001 team took the championship. The team consisted of 2000 players—Ryan Ehlers, Dana Janssen, Jason Kubicek; and 2001 players—Josh Pleiss, Jim Krajicek, Marcus Goldenstien, Dan Ensor, Justin Hermsen, and Chris Kemmey.

Thanks to all Gretna Alumni who participated—it was an excellent weekend of basketball, competition, camaraderie and fun. Special thanks to Dana Janssen, who coordinated this year’s event. See you all next year!

Mens Alumni B-Ball Results - 2

The loser’s bracket game between 95-97 and 06 came down to the wire. With 2.7 seconds left in the game and 95-97 down by 4 points, Kyle Janssen hit a 3 pointer to pull his team within 1. Following a time out, the ensuing inbounds pass resulted in a controversial traveling call as Karl Tomanek received some unwanted ‘assistance’ from his older brother, Rob. It set up a quick inbounds and once again Janssen hit the game winner from NBA land. This was much ado about nothing, however, as 95-97 was beaten in the next round by 04, which benefited from a hot hand by Zach Brown. Zach lead his team throughout the tourney with 18 three pointers.

The championship bracket semi-final game was intense and physical. 89-92 jumped to a 14-2 lead and held it all the way until the last 30 seconds. Dan Ensor hit three straight 3 pointers to bring 00-01 within 3 points. Just like the NCAA tourney, free throws made the difference as 89-92 struggled at the charity stripe leaving the door open for 00-01. With 14 seconds remaining and 00-01 down by 2, Tom Mason trapped Ensor in the corner for a jump ball—possession 89-92. With 7 seconds remaining, 89-92 appeared to be headed into the championship game. An inbound play was set up to get the ball into the hands of one of their best players—Steve Greenfield. As Greenfield came around a Dan Dostal screen, his feet got tangled and the ball sailed, giving 00-01 new life. Dana Janssen was doubled on the inbound, leaving Ryan Ehlers open fo

Mens Alumni B-Ball Results - 1

This year’s alumni basketball tournament went off with out a hitch. There were a lot of exciting and intense ball games. In the first round, there were several match ups that were set up to ensure great ball games, and they did not disappoint. For example, 73-77 was pitted against 79-84, which made for a battle of the ages. This game showed that the younger team does not always prevail, as the age and wisdom of 73-77 overcame the relative youth and speed of 79-84. The 00-01 vs. 07 game showcased the leading scorer of the tournament—Dan Ensor—who rattled off 29 points in one game. His outside shooting and quick one-two step was a tough match up for any team. In the late games Friday night, the 05 and the 89-92 teams rose to the occasion and advanced to the next round.

Playing in the loser’s bracket would prove to be the biggest challenge in day 2. If a losing team wanted to make it to the championship game, they would have to play 5 straight games. Day 2 was a great day to watch the tourney as 4 games came down to the wire. It started with a battle between 95-97 and 89-92 which featured a shooting contest between Kyle Janssen and Steve Greenfield. Ultimately, attrition won out as having only six players doomed 95-97 down the stretch and 89-92 moved onto the semi final. On the opposite side of the bracket, 00-01 was matched against the speed and youth of 05. There was a good display of sportsmanship between the teams, but it was evident the previous night’s

Girls Alumni Tourney Canceled

The 2008 girls alumni tournament has been canceled. A minimum of 4 teams is required to justify a tournament. Unfortunately, only the combined class of 2001-2002 registered. Two other classes expressed interest, but did not register.

We'll try to get this going again in 2009.
