Born November 5, 1956 in Itasca County, he was the son of Donald and Grace (Coy) Oquist. Donald was a Greenway High School Graduate, was a member of the Triumphant Life Church, and had served in the United States Marine Corps. He lived most of his life in Grand Rapids.
