I joined the Air Force in 1980 after living in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a short period after graduation. Coming in I was hoodwinked by a recruiter and spent the first 16 years, 13 of it overseas, as a cop. Although the job was thankless and consisted of too many 12-hour shifts, it did offer me a golden opportunity to travel extensively. I lived in North Dakota, New Mexico, Virginia and Texas in the continental United States and Alaska, England, and Japan outside of it. I also did many temporary duty assignments all around the world in places as diverse as Iraq and the Philippines. After 16 years as a cop I decided it was time for a change so I cross-trained into computer programming. This was a good career move, but it basically relegated the rest of my time in the Air Force to a 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM existence. Looking back on it all now, I'd take the good with the bad do it all again given the chance.
