| About Me | I would love to hear from my friends wherever you are in the world. You are always welcome at our house in Clarksville. As a volunteer with AFS, I want to encourage you to let folks know about us.. Go to www.AFS.org/usa and www.misstennky.org This may help you know more about me. I wrote this for my 50th high school reunion from Greenbrier HS. Dr. Barbara Y. Wills, NBCC, LPC, DOB 10/10/40, 2233 Roanoke Rd, Clarksville, TN 37043 Dr. Barbara Wills grew up in Ridgetop, TN, working with her mom and dad in the family grocery. She was an only child who enjoyed playing basketball, plus participating in all kinds of 4-H Club activities. Her most memorable event was winning, with her two (2) friends, the District 4-H Poultry Judging Team Contest. After graduating from Greenbrier HS, she enrolled in Belmont College where she majored in Human Ecology, sang with the Beltones and was introduced into working with troubled youth at the Spencer Youth Center as a volunteer. During her sophomore year, she married Stanley Wills and transferred to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Her husband took a job in Washington, DC; hence, she transferred to the University of Maryland. Mr. Wills took another position in the field and she transferred to Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi. Here she completed her undergraduate degree in Human Ecology and her master's degree in Guidance and Counseling. Forest Hill School (1-12) in Jackson, Mississippi, was her first teaching position where she taught world geography and human ecology. She also sponsored the Y-Teens and kept a study hall of 150 including grades 7-12. Her second year, she moved to West Memphis, Arkansas, and became the only counselor for a school of 850 where she also taught a class in careers for six (6) years and sponsored the Student Government Association. Her first daughter, Samantha, was born just as she was leaving West Memphis and moving back to the DC area to study French at the Foreign Service Institute in preparation for accompanying her husband to Senegal (West Africa) for the next two (2) years. Upon the family's return to the USA, she entered the Memphis City School system as a teacher of Human Ecology at Douglas High School. The following year, she became the first white faculty member at Booker T. Washington High School in their counseling department. While there, she finished another advanced degree in educational psychology and administration and supervision at the University of Tennessee concluding with her research on the black Monday boycotts that followed the Martin Luther King assassination. She reorganized the 2000+ school records, wrote a joint program for culinary arts and child care and introduced the counseling office into the age of the computer. After several years, Mr. Wills accepted another position in DC again and Dr. Wills became a middle school counselor chairperson at Roger B. Taney Junior High School, just outside Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland for the next six (6) years. Her second year on the job, another daughter, Katrinda, joined the Wills' family. This counseling assignment was one and one half hours fr...(read more) |
