Class of 1964

Dear Great Falls High School Classmates,

I never attended high school in Great Falls and was a resident for only a few years when I was six and seven years old. We were “textile brats” and, growing up, lived in small mill towns in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. My dad worked for J.P. Stevens (and later Burlington) and in Great Falls we lived in the “superintendent’s house” in what was, as I remember, a wonderful park area (Republic Park) that was entered through large, wrought iron gates. It had two swimming pools, playgrounds, fish ponds, a rock tunnel, the women’s club house, a scout hut, and many other areas for a child to explore. I visited again in the early 1970’s and learned that the pools had been filled in. In fact, while exploring the park then, I saw in the ground, in tile lettering, “deep end”, where the larger, adult pool had been located. I remember several people from those long ago times and have always wondered how they are doing. There was Tom Settle, who lived through the woods from our house in the park, Kate Davis, ( I think the name is correct.) daughter of the high school principal at the time, and Harry David Tibbs a friend of my brother. I remember also my second grade teacher Mrs. Davis. We were members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and there was a wonderful elderly lady who attended, an Episcopal deaconess, who we called “Miss Mary”. My dad and Sam Homewood, a family friend and fellow J.P. Stevens employee, conducted services at the church for a while as laymen because St. Peters was without a minister. Although I lived in Great Falls for only a short while, I had many fond memories of the people and area and, as a child growing up in the South of the 1950’s, it was truly a magical place. I would love to know more about the folks I have mentioned as well as other classmates of that period. Best wishes to members of the Great Falls High School class of 1964 (which would have been my class) and a special thank you for graciously reaching out to me as a fellow student.

Sincerely,

John L. Morgan III
