Class ring recovered

A Clarkson man slipped his high school class ring back on his finger after having lost it more than 10 years ago.
Joseph 'Gil' Smith was surprised and pleased to meet Keith Melvin, Jr., a Leitchfield resident who found Smith's senior ring on Aug. 7 while caring for his lawn on Claggett Drive.
The ring was half buried beneath a downspout in Melvin's backyard. Melvin noticed a glint of metal when he was trimming grass around the concrete drain.
"I thought it was a bottle cap but when I picked it up I saw the blue on top," he said.
Melvin cleaned the ring and soaked it in dish liquid over night. The blue gem was surrounded by white gold with the name 'Gil' and "honor' on one side and a Cougar on the other. It had a 'G' in the stone.
Melvin contacted The Record to help find the owner of the ring. The story and a picture appeared on The Record's website, www.the-record.net, Friday afternoon.
Several people contacted the paper about the possible owner, but noone knew how to get in touch with Smith. Smith called The Record Monday morning, having been told about the ring by Rodney Lush of St. Paul, who saw the story on the website.
Melvin visited Smith at his home in Clarkson to return the ring. Smith was pleased with the discovery, saying he wasn't sure how the ring got lost, but that he had lived on Claggett Street with a former wife for a short time in the early 1990s.
Smith offered Melvin a reward but Melvin refused.
"I'm not looking for money, I just thought he'd want to have his ring back," Melvin said.
Gil Smith said his parents, Eugene and Gerogetta Smith of Anneta helped him purchase the ring in 1984. The name 'Gil' on the side of the ring that brough recognition was the name of his uncle who died in the war, Smith said, although he is called both Joseph Gil and Gil.
After 24 years, the ring fits a little snug on Smith's hand but the smile on his face was just the right size as he shook Melvin's hand and thanked him for the good deed.
The class ring mentioned in the Record has been claimed by a Clarkson man. 08/11/08. No further info at this time.
I have not actually found a class ring, but in the Record news paper dated August 7, 2008, someone has found a 1984 class ring with the name of "Gil" on it. I can remember a guy named Gil Smith that graduated that year, but know nothing about him. I e-mailed the news paper to let them know this info, but They have no way of finding him without any current information on him. If anyone knows Gil Smith or his whereabouts, please contact The Record, in care of Deanna Lashley, at www.the-record.net or call Deanna at 259-6061. Thanks for anyones help!!!!!
