Malinda Richey-Taffi

Malinda Richey-Taffi

Class of 1989

Malinda and her family lived in Bridge City when Hurricane Ike hit there home September 13, 2008. Her husband Ken, daughters Kari and Carmen and herself were in the house that night as the projected path did not look that bad for them. At 5:30 am they awoke to find water surging into their house to the knees. By the time they reached their attic the water was waist high. They managed to get outside as they did not know how high the water would rise. Some neighbors had stayed and had a truck pulled out running and their boat. Malinda and her husband managed to get the two girls and two of the family's four dogs out of the house and into the truck. As they started driving the water rose above the bumper of the truck. They put everyone in the boat and her husband held the boat to the truck for anchorage for three hours in 100 plus winds and waves gusting over the side of the boat. When daybreak came they drove the truck up on a bridge and stayed there until dump trucks started coming into the city abotu 1 PM. They went back to the house in the boat and rescued the other two dogs. They ended up in a shelter in Orange, Texas until 9PM when a friend came to find them. They lost their whole house and everything in it including all three vechicles.
