Karl Mason Obituary

Karl Sewell Mason much loved dad, husband, son, brother, friend, and mentor left us too early on Sunday, July 20, 2014. He was driving to serve in youth ministry when struck by another vehicle. Karl was born on March 10, 1966 to Earl and Sandy Mason and raised in Grand Forks, ND. He attended West and Valley Junior before graduating from Central High School in 1984. He enjoyed spending his college summers at Yellowstone Park scooping ice cream with a side of hiking advice for tourists. Karl graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1988. He earned his Masters in Systems Engineering from Iowa State University in 2006. Karl began a career with Honeywell in Phoenix, AZ in 1988. He also worked briefly for AG Communications and Allied Signal. Karl served faithfully at Northminster Presbyterian in Phoenix. He married his wife, Meta on August 6, 1994. They are the proud parents of Skylar, Hannah, and Kody. The family moved to Tucson in 1997 where Karl was employed by Honeywell Aerospace. Karl served as chair of the Foundations Team, youth group leader, and other teams at Grace Community Church. His wife faithfully volunteered Karl for every VBS and he never complained. In fact, he enjoyed it. Karl was an avid mountain biker- riding the Chutes, Rail X, 50 Year Trail, and many laps of the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. He also loved riding scooters and motorcycles with his wife, often riding with the Sky Island Riders Scooter Club. Karl preferred the purr of his BMW to the roar of her cruiser. He was most recently welcomed into the Sonoran Desert Fliers- an R/C airplane club. Karl loved hiking the mountains with his family and K-9 buddies. Karl served as a den leader for Pack 299. His calm, gentle soul endeared him to all he served at home, in work, Scouts, ministry, and life. His desire to follow Christ left eternal impressions on all of us. Karl is survived by his wife, Meta; daughters, Skylar and Hannah; son, Dakota; parents, Earl and Sandy Mason; brother, Mark (Melissa) Mason; sister, Kristen (Lee) Nelson; and numerous aunts, uncles, in-laws, nieces and nephews. Karl's Life Celebration Party will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Please wear the color red or anything Star Trek, Star Wars, scooter or a mountain bike related. Following Karl's heart, a chocolate potluck will follow. Bring stories and chocolate to share. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Community Church CHIC camp fund. Arrangements by VISTOSO FUNERAL HOME. (Long-time family friend from 1st Presbyterian church and high school... posted by: Andrea Kelley CHS '84)
