What is Robert Englund known for?

Robert Barton Englund, best known for his iconic portrayal of the supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street film series, was born on June 6, 1947, in Glendale, California. His acting journey kicked off at California State University, Northridge, when he was 12, and he further honed his skills at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Englund's career, which began in regional theater and plays by Shakespeare and Bernard Shaw, transitioned to film with his debut in Buster and Billie in 1974. He is also recognized for his supporting roles in films during the 1970s such as Stay Hungry, A Star Is Born, and Big Wednesday.

In 1983, Englund made waves as the resistance fighter Willie in the mini-series V. His performance in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street a year later in 1984, firmly entrenched him within the horror film genre, and he is now widely-regarded as one of its most defining actors.

Did you know that Englund once auditioned for the roles of Han Solo and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars? Although he didn't get either part, he played a key role in the Star Wars universe by suggesting Mark Hamill for the role of Luke. He has made over 100 appearances in film and television and continues to revisit his role as Krueger, reminding audiences why they were scared to sleep at night.
