His career in Major League Baseball spanned from 1981 to 1992, during which time he played as a pitcher for several well-known teams. Schmidt's Major League Baseball debut was with the Texas Rangers on May 1, 1981. He played for the Rangers until 1985, then moved on to the Chicago White Sox in 1986. Following his stint with the White Sox, he spent 1987-1989 with the Baltimore Orioles, and later the Montreal Expos between 1990 and 1991. His last MLB appearance was for the Seattle Mariners on May 26, 1992.
