On January 1, 1970, I resigned my commission as an artillery office in the New Hampshire National Guard as a conscientious objector after I heard of the My Lai 4 massacre in Vietnam.

On March 16, 1968, U.S. Army forces lead by Lt. Willam Calley and Captain Ernest Medina conducted mass murder upon 347 to 504 unarmed citizens of the Republic of Vietnam..that is..South Vietnam. The majority of the victims were almost entirely civilians and most were women and children. .Some of the victims were sexually abused, beaten, tortured, or maimed, and some of the dead bodies were mutilated

I realized then that I could in good conscience no longer wear the same kind of uniform that Lt. William Calley and Capt Ernest Medina and Major Colin Powell wore. If I did, I would be identifying with them. I could not study war nor could I teach war to my men anymore. One can not be a Christian and kill our brothers and sisters.

I graduated from UNH in 66, the first year they drafted college grads, so I did not have to worry about my first job. I decided to go to Infantry OCS to get a commission. I figured that if I had to serve in combat I might as well get paid for it. I served in Vietnam from Feb 9th 1969 to Feb 8th 1970 as an Infantry 2nd Lt with C, 4/12, 199th Light Infantry Brigade. Light means you walked, a lot. We actually did many Eagle Flights, Air Mobile insertions many times into potentially hot landing zones. Hot means bullets were flying. I left Nam as a 1st Lt and after spending a month in Gorham I reported to Fort Dix NJ where I spent about 1 and 1/2 years pushing troops through Basic Training. I separated as a Captain in 1970 because I really did not want to go back to Nam. I am active with both the VFW and American Legion.
