Gerald Oleson Class of 1959
Army, 3 Years On January 1, 1970, I resigned my commission as an artillery office in the New Hampshire National Guard as a conscientious objector after I heard of the My Lai 4 massacre in Vietnam. On March 16, 1968, U.S. Army forces lead by Lt. Willam Calley and Captain Ernest Medina conducted mass murder upon 347 to 504 unarmed citizens of the Republic of Vietnam..that is..South Vietnam. The majority of the victims were almost entirely civilians and most were women and children. .Some of the victims were sexually abused, beaten, tortured, or maimed, and some of the dead bodies were mutilated I realized then that I could in good conscience no longer wear the same kind of uniform that Lt. William Calley and Capt Ernest Medina and Major Colin Powell wore. If I did, I would be identifying with them. I could not study war nor could I teach war to my men anymore. One can not be a Christian and kill our brothers and sisters.
