Edward Whalen

Class of 1947

Edward Whalen was recently featured in the PeaceKeeper Magazine Sept. 2012 edition. It highlighted his lifetime achievements in law enforcement. The highlights include his background being raised bilingual amidst a strong Hispanic culture. He is the first in his family to obtain a college degree and advanced credentials; graduating from SJSU with a B.A. in Sociology. He is 6 units shy of a M.A. in Mexican/American studies, which he dropped to obtain a lifetime credential to teach Administration of Justice/Sociology. After honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy he went to work @ Soledad Prison. He was a correctional officer advancing to Sargeant and ultimately Correction Counselor I then II. He transferred to Salinas paroles as an agent eventually becoming Unit Supervisor. He retired 8/1/88 and then served on numerous boards including Citizens Advisory Committee, CTF, Franciscan Workers of Junipero Sierra, Salinas and organized the "Soledad Old Timers" Reunion for 20 years. In retirement he taught part time for seven years at Hartnell College and also taught DUI and Traffic school for the National Safety Institute in Monterey County. Currently Ed lives in Idaho were he is a volunteer,fundraiser and spokesperson for the Idaho Youth Ranch. Ed's incredible appetite for life has enabled him to live an adventurous and full life... one only his ancestors could have dreamed of.
