| About Me | Paul A. Oelkrug, C. A. Biographical Information I was born and raised in Gloucester City New Jersey and graduated from the Gloucester City Jr.-Sr. High School in 1965. One year later, in August 1966, I was drafted into the United States Army. Upon being drafted into the Army, I was sent to Fort Dix, New Jersey for eight weeks of basic training. After basic training I was sent to Fort Gordon, Georgia, for advanced training at the United States Army Southeastern Signal School where I was trained as a Radio Rely and Carrier Operator (31M20). After signal school, I was assigned to the 324th Signal Company (RR), and in 1967 the company was deployed to Vietnam. I operated from Long Bin to Dong Ha, but eventually finished my tour in Hue, having been sent there to re-establish a radio link between 1st ARVN HQ and Hue MACV Team 3 after the city was cleared following the Tet Offensive. After being discharged from active duty in July 1968 my career took many turns. I worked in the electronics industry until I moved to Texas in 1974 when I entered the HVAC field installing commercial and residential air conditioning systems for the next 20 years. In the early 90s I decided to go to college for the first time. After a couple of changes in majors, I discovered how much I love history and literature, so for my undergraduate degree, I got a BS in History with a minor in American Literature from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1997. I immediately went into my masters program where I worked on a degree in Public History with a certificate in Archival Administration earning my Masters in 2000. My first professional position was with the City of Fort Worth, and then a position with UT-Arlington Special Collections as an LAII for the next year and a half. When an opportunity to come to work for UT-Dallas Special Collections came up, I accepted the offer and began working for UTD Special Collections in November 2002. Since coming to the Special Collections Department, I have had the opportunity to work on many interesting aviation collections. I also have had the opportunity to work with many interesting people the world over. In August 2007 when Dr. Erik Carlson resigned as head of Special Collections to take a position elsewhere, I was promoted to his position. I consider myself extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with one of the premier aviation collections in the country, if not the world. Our collections have been used in TV documentaries, books, periodical articles, and museum exhibits all over the world and I am proud to be a part of the team that makes these collections available for all to use. On December 31, 2016, I retired from The University of Texas at Dallas after nearly 15 years if service. I am currently serving as a volunteer at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, Texas and am also a member of the...(read more) |
