Lois (Nelson) Hollstedt
Class of 1956
Lois (Nelson) Hollstedt, CM. Lois graduated from Gladstone in 1956 and moved with her young family to Kamloops in 1964. Lois worked as a Manager for the YWCA and United Way and was elected to the Kamloops Municipal Council for 2 terms. She served as a member of the provincial Legal Services Board, a director for BC Children and Women's Hospital and president of the former Kamloops Society for the Mentally Handicapped. Along the way, Lois prepared herself for executive duties by studying Accounting and Business Administration. In 1986, Lois returned to Vancouver to become Chief Executive Officer for the YWCA. Lois retired from the YWCA in 2001 but is still active as Chair of Community Living BC (CLBC), an agency that delivers support and services to adults with developmental disabilities and their families in British Columbia. in October 2006, Lois was inducted into the Order of Canada for her dedication to improving the lives of women and children. She was recognized by the Order of Canada committee as the Founding President of the YWCA of Kamloops and CEO of the YWCA in Vancouver and praised for playing a leading role in the establishment of daycare centres, art programs, residences for single mothers and battered women and their children. Other initiatives included in the citation were research on fetal alcohol syndrome and an employment program to help disadvantaged women move from social assistance to the workforce.
