About Me | In December 2012, I retired from my position as Vice President of Communications and Marketing for Mountain States. My wife Teresa and I are busy in our new chapter of life caring for parents and traveling together. Here is one bio format I have used before my retirement: Ed Herbert joined Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA) in 1999 as Vice President over Communications, Marketing and Public Relations. Additional areas of responsibility over the years have included the Medical Call Center (Ask-A-Nurse/NurseLink), Business Health Sales the MSHA Print Shop, the Health Resources Center (in the Mall at Johnson City and Kingsport Town Center), the HeartCoach along with the Community Health and Wellness Services (CHAWS). Prior to joining MSHA, Herbert was in television sales and management with WJHL-TV 11 in Johnson City (Tennessee), and stations in Richmond (Virginia) and New Orleans (Louisiana) from 1983-1999. Missing the mountains of East Tennessee, Herbert returned to the Tri-Cities in 1999 for a career in which he could utilize his media, promotional and marketing experience. The result was Mountain States Health Alliance. Herbert believes his role in the healthcare system is utilizing many of his former careers (theater, marketing, media) to help educate people in our region how they can better access the incredible healthcare services within MSHA. He even experienced those services first hand when he had thyroid cancer in 2004 and 2005. After all treatments were done by June 2005, he was then and has been cancer free since. Outside of work, Herbert is married to his beautiful wife, Teresa. He has been very involved with his children, Katie, Eddie and Teresa’s son, his bonus son, Bill Shortt. Hobbies include traveling in their motor home (the Alli 3) with Teresa (and their other two kids, two toy poodles Alli and Noah), working out in their home gym, volunteering and performing in various musical venues. He earned a private pilot's license in 2004. Music has been a big part of Herbert’s life since he was a child. He also has a long history performing in theater since a youth, being an emcee and singing professionally on stage. Today Herbert uses this gift from God in area churches, directs the choir at his church and to help non-profit organizations in their fundraisers. He is/has been an active member with; • the Johnson City Area United Way (Board Member, 2009 Campaign Chair, 2011-2012 Chairman of the Board), • local Chambers of Commerce (Johnson City Leadership Grad, former Ambassador), • Tennessee Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations (2009-2011 President, Board Member, 2012 Lamar Jackson Distinguished Service recipient), • the Johnson City Kiwanis Club (2003-2004 Lt. Gov. for Division 7, 1993 and 2012 Kiwanian of the Year, past Club President, Hixson Medal recipient, past KY-TN District Convention Chairperson), • Elizabeth Chapel UMC (Choir Director, 2011-12 Chair, Admin Council, Fall Bazaar Event Entertainment) • the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra (past Board Member, featured vocalist, Concert Emcee) • Mountain States Credit Union (2012 President of the Board, Board Member) • the Southern Appalachian Ronald McDonald House (past Board member, Radio-thon Chair), • American Cancer Society (Leadership Council, Relay for Life), • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (past Walk Chair, Honorary Chair), • the March of Dimes Walk America (All-Star Chefs event committee, former WalkAmerica Committee member), Herbert has been honored with the 2010 Servant's Heart Award from MSHA, a 2012 CenturyLink Faith in the Future Award, past recipient of the Business Journal's HealthCare Hero award and the 2012 Lamar Jackson Distinguished Service Award from the TN Society of Healthcare Marketing and PR. Herbert was born in Richmond, VA. He graduated with honors from Williamsville North High School outside of Buffalo, New York in 1975 and from Maryville College (...(read more) |
