About Me | In 2012 I plan to move to my 8 acre parcel of property in Sand Creek Township, Jennings County, Indiana adjacent to Mom's 92 acre family farm (purchased by my grandfather in 1912). My Mom and I are only separated by Sand Creek (which is about the size of Fall Creek and runs through the northern part of Jennings County). I'm in the process of renovating the old Brewersville United Methodist Church (built in the 1880's) that sits facing Base Road (in Jennings County, that's the central North/South Road like Meridian Street in Indy) and also have the former preacher's residence on the property. That building's in pretty delapidated condition so I've re-roofed it (not personally -ha) to keep it standing until I determine its fate. I retired from National City Bank in 2005 and have been working on this property (slowly but surely for the past five years or so), while helping care for my 94 year-old Mom in Brewersville. I've continued working on our family history (Gearries & Amstutz) and organizing my books and collectibles. I completed one small family history primarily of original stories, written by me and others in our family (some now deceased), in time for a family reunion in the 90's (or was it the '80's? - how time has flown). I wrapped up my banking career with the now defunct National City Bank (someone should've advised me never to go into banking). My final fling with the finance world was working on contract to consolidate the Chicago and Louisville check processing operations into Indianapolis. The last I heard they were eliminating the remainder of my staff to make room for more mortgage originators (in 2006-7) and the rest is, as they say, history. Now that I'm retired, l have more time to read and study all the topics far flung from the banking world. I've accumulated an extensive and probably far too large library- mostly non-fiction with the exception of classics. I've really enjoyed picking up rare books at auction and garage sales over the past thirty years and have amassed (in my humble opinion) an interesting collection of antiquarian, autographed, and Easton Press leather-bound books. Now that I'm retired I'm planning on reading more of them. Fortunately, I like to think I have developed quite varied interests and am always thinking of new projects. Having never been or likely to become a grandparent, I've thrown myself into other endeavors. I do have many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and (gasp) a great-great niece and several great-great nephews to keep track of. I've been extraordinarily proud of their diverse successes over the years with graduates from Notre Dame, Butler, DePaw, U of I, Rose-Hulman, Ball State and the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. They've migrated into occcupations that run the gamut from working on cancer research on the IU School of Medicene to becoming a member of the Screen Actors Guild in LA (John Gearries, my great-nephew has had bit parts in "Year One", "The Break-Up", and played a police officer on "The Young and the Restless"). The entire Gearries family has to keep him grounded and tell him he's not really a star until we hear him speak in a first run movie. But he is talented and dreams big (there's nothing wrong with that!). My brother Jeff's daughter, Janelle, just got a job in the Sports Management industry and relocated to Stamford, Connecticut. She got her Masters in Sports Management from Ohio State last year. If Stamford's good enough for Bob Costas (I read he's moving there also), it might be good enough for a Gearries. She was an intern for the NCAA last year and helped coordinate the Womens' Final Four in Indianapolis. I must try not to get carried away - there are many success stories in the Gearries family - I could go on and on but, as you can tell, I am a very proud aunt. Whatever I did not accomplish, I'm hopeful others in the family will in the future. I do think, however, that I just might finally write that book I've been talking about for years to demonstrate to the wo...(read more) |
