Graduation Year Class of 1930
Date of Passing Feb 20, 2011
About April 23, 1913 -- February 20, 2011
Mary Ellen Frame Weaver, former Akron Ellet High School teacher and long-time resident of the Akron area, died peacefully on February 20, 2011.
She was the daughter of former Akron veterinarian Dr. Donard James Frame and wife, Eva, and was born April 23, 1913 in Columbus, Ohio. At the age of seven, she moved with her family to Firestone Park, Akron. Mary Ellen graduated in 1930 from Garfield High School where she was awarded the Womanhood Cup; she was salutatorian, yearbook editor, and class secretary. She graduated from The College of Wooster where she became a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Eta Sigma Pi, both national honor societies. Mary Ellen won several other distinguished honors while there, graduating in 1934. Awarded one of four teaching positions offered by the City of Akron that year, Mary Ellen was hired to teach Latin and English at Ellet High School. In 1937, she married her college sweetheart, Joel Milton Weaver, also a graduate of The College of Wooster. Joel and Mary Ellen resided in Manchester, Ohio (Summit County) where they started a real estate business. She was a member of the Lakeview Church of Christ and later of High Street Christian Church. She was a sponsor for the Association of Hope Homes for the Retarded. After moving to Charlotte, N.C. to help care for her ill grandson, she became a member of the Myers Park Presbyterian Church before returning to Akron.
Mary Ellen was proud of her Irish roots and loved family history and genealogy. Named for her great-grandmother Marilla Brady Israel, Mary Ellen could trace her lineage back to Robert Israel, officer in the Revolutionary War, and to the immigrant John Israel, who was deputy commissioner of Baltimore in the late 1600s. On her father's side, Mary Ellen descended from James Frame (who immigrated from Carstairs, Lanarkshire, Scotland about 1750) and Susan Downard (whose father William was born in Northern Ireland and immigrated to Chester County, Pa. about 1720).
Mary Ellen was predeceased by her husband, Joel; parents, Dr. D.J. and Eva; sister, Helen Jane (Leonard F.); and brother, Donard, Jr. She is survived by her three children, Dr. Mary Jo MacCracken of Hudson, Ohio (Alan), Dr. Joel M. Weaver II of Westerville, Ohio (Barbara), and Helen Weaver Kaufman of Charlotte, N.C. Mary Ellen also leaves six grandchildren and seven great-grand-children, Dr. John Milton Weaver (Jamie), Jonathan and Rachel; Jennifer Ashley Correll Stillman (Jonathon), Jackson and Charlotte; Alan L. (''Trip'') MacCracken III (Elizabeth), Alan John (A.J.); Laura Ann Weaver Ryan (Scott), Katherine and Joel; Dr. Evan Joel Staver Kaufman(Kelly); Susan Staver Mary Kaufman; nephews Donald (Nora) and Dale Snyder.
The family would like to thank Chambrel Retirement Center, the staff of the Copley Health Center and Hospice of Visiting Nurses. There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service for Mary Ellen will be held at Catavolos Funeral Home, 3653 W. Market Street, Fairlawn, Saturday, March 5, 2011, at 11 a.m.; officiating will be Mary Ellen's granddaughter-in-law, The Reverend Kelly Kaufman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Box 810, Memphis, TN 38101. Interment will be at Rose Hill Burial Park, Fairlawn, Ohio.
