About Stephen Lawrence "Stevie" Manzanares
Manzanares Stephen "Stevie" Lawrence Manzanares, 45, a fifth generation Pomona resident, passed away on July 18, 2008 in the loving arms of his family at the family home in Pomona following a courageous two month battle with cancer. He is survived by his son, Stephen Raymond of Riverside; his daughter, Stephanie Araiza (Ruben); and grandchildren, Savannah, Ruben Jr., Faith, David and Robert of Rialto; his parents, Step hen and Dora Manzanares of Pomona; a brother, Arthur Manzanares (Becky) of Pomona; sisters, Dee Dee Manzanares of Hesperia and Donna Otero (James) of Pomona. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Stephen was born on August 8, 1962. He was a descendant of Pomona's founding families and also a member of the Costanoan Rumsen tribe whose lineage can be traced back many centuries in California. He attended Pomona schools and after graduating from Garey High Scho ol, he joined the Laborers Union Local 806 and was dispatched to the Los Angeles County Fair where he remained working for many years until the loss of his vision forced him into an early retirement. Stephen occupied his time by becoming a very well known voice on many of the local radio stations. He constantly dedicated songs to family and friends and prided himself in his ability to time his calling so that he could always win the prizes or tickets that were being offered. His other passion was the Dod gers. He was an avid fan who attended many games and was never without his radio in his ear, listening to the games, Dodger Talk or any other Dodger newsflash. We will all miss his many phone calls to us, seeing him walking around the neighborhood, his famous quotes, "I Ain't Happy," "Gotta Go, Gotta Go," and shouting out "Who's Here?" every time he entered the house. The family would like to extend a special thanks to VNA Hospice for all their support over the past few weeks and also to all the family an d friends who made his journey easier and more special. The viewing will be held at Todd's Memorial Chapel in Pomona on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the rosary immediately following. Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pomona at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday with burial following at Holy Cross Cemetery, Pomona.
