About | Warren C. King of Garden City, N.Y.Warren C. King, 90, whose remarkable coaching career at Garden City High School spanned 61 years, died on June 25, 2004 after a long illness. He was predeceased by his first wife, Alice in 1974. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Margaret (Peggy) King; nephews, John King and David King; nieces, Mary King, Patricia Graff, Martha King-Sedwick, and Laura King; grandniece, Molly McCarthy King; sister-in-law, Mary C. Mathis; brother-in-law, Charles T. McMahon. Born in Binghamton, N.Y., in 1914, the son of George W. and Mary (Nolan) King, he graduated from the Peddie School in N.J. and moved on to Dartmouth College where he starred in football and track. Mr. King coached in eight different decades, beginning in 1939, when he was assistant football and head ice hockey coach at Springfield College. He came to Garden City in 1940 as coach of football and track and did not step down until illness ended his career in 2001. He served in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy during WWII. A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, July 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in Garden City, N.Y. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City.
