About | Michael Hardy Edwards was the kind of person who excelled at many sports and had a successful financial career. But he was extremely modest about his achievements. So much so that he usually diverted the conversation if it turned to him. Edwards, 33, who grew up in Garden City and was a champion hurdler in high school there, worked as a managing director of Sandler O'Neill and Partners, a financial firm on the 104th floor of Two World Trade Center. Edwards spent 11 years with the company. "He never told people about what he did," said his wife, Jackie, a freelance fashion sales executive. "He never wanted to talk about finances. He would wear jeans, yet fly first class. That's how he was. "We were about to celebrate our fifth anniversary on Sept.14," she said. The couple lived in Manhattan and enjoyed traveling. She said her husband was not only one of Garden City High School's top hurdlers, but he continued being very active in sports ranging from sky and scuba diving to golf, skiing and snowboarding. "I always went with him. We traveled all over the Caribbean. While he scuba dived, I snorkeled. When he was sky diving, I always watched," she recalled, adding that she was not as daring as he was. "He was a bit crazy," she noted affectionately. Edwards earned a degree in political science from the College of William & Mary in Virginia. His wife added that he was known for his sense of humor and his close friends always referred to him as "Hardy," his middle name. "He always had a smile that would light up the room," she said. Edwards is survived by a brother, Christopher, 31, a cinematographer who lived near the couple's Manhattan apartment, and by William and Mary Ann, his parents in Garden City. (Source: Newsday) |
