Graduation Year Class of 1980
Date of Passing Feb 25, 2015
About Terry Hensley, a former Garden City resident, passed away suddenly on February 24th, 2015, at So. Nassau Hospital in Rockville Centre. Terry was a lifelong resident of the village, residing in the “family’s ancestral home”, until his marriage in 1990 to Vicki Levine. He was a Garden City HS alumnus, graduating in 1980, playing both JV and Varsity football under Coach Warren King.

His lifelong love of the sport led him to work as a “Spotter” for the NY Jets for almost 13 seasons. He loved calling the plays and spending time in the booth.

Terry attended Five Towns College, where he majored in both music and business, and was formerly employed at Morgan Stanley. He was a present staff member of the Five Towns School District’s security division, and a “sleep consultant” at Sears. When his schedule permitted, he played bass guitar with the GC Community Group’s, “Sing for Food”, annual fund raiser, under the direction of fellow GC alumnus, “director” Andy Morreale, and was a also a former member the rock group, “Pop Rocks”.

His love of family and interest in baseball while growing up brought him to coach his daughter Arielle, who played in the Oceanside Softball League for many seasons, and to manage a few of the girls teams that were deemed uncoachable or abandoned by their managers. Terry always saw the good in others, and wanted to help those less fortunate than himself, including the animals that he so loved. “Pay it forward” was a credo he lived by. Many thanks to his mentors, the coaches in Garden City that were instrumental in planting the seed.

Another of his favorite pastimes was spending time at the local cinemas, accruing some 150 or so films annually under his belt, and posting a web page for the same. His love of history led him to recent membership of the Sons of the American Revolution, and new knowledge of “The Hensley Clan’s” 300 years.

A memorial service was held at Gutterman’s in Rockville Centre on February 27th, and interment was at Mt. Ararat in Farmingdale on March 6th. The family would like to thank the many that attended, and the outpouring of condolences was truly a testimony to a life well lived. He did make a difference.

He is survived by his wife Vicki, and daughter Arielle; sister-in-law Elena Kaplan and husband David; their children Samantha and Jeremy; mother June Fairhurst Fay and step father Matthew, of Garden City; brother Gregg and his wife Christine; nephews Ryan and Eric, of Franklin Square; Aunt and “second mother” Arlene Fairhurst Kister, and her husband Richard Kister. The many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends, will miss his presence.
