About | Jack Stewart Gray, 86, of Buxton, NC, crossed the bar December 10, 2013, at Sentara Nursing Center in Barco, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 4, 1927, to Charles Poole Gray, and Odessa Jennette Gray, in Buxton. Jack was married to the late Mary Louise Ballance for 60 years. He often called that his greatest achievement. As a young man, he served in the United States Coast Guard. He received his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from East Carolina University and his master’s in Education Administration from the University of Virginia. He was a teacher and principal at Graham Park in Dumfries, VA. When he moved back home in 1971, he took ownership of the Tower Circle Motel. Over the next forty years, he was an active member of the Island community. He was a board member of the RBC bank, and a board member of the Cape Hatteras Electric Company. He served on the Dare County School Board, was a lifetime member, lay leader, and choir member at the Buxton Methodist Church. Mr. Jack was a member of the Lion’s club in VA; a member of the Cape Hatteras Angler’s Club, a volunteer fireman; a Shriner and a member of the Masonic Lodge for 59 years. He is survived by his daughters, Jaki L. Gray, and her son Jackson Troy Whitley; and Mary S. Gray McAnally, her husband Michael, and their daughter Brittany; his sister Janet Finnegan, and his brother Tommy Gray. He is predeceased by his sisters, Iva McAden, and Eleanor Gray; his brothers, Curtis Gray, Fatio Gray, and Wallace Gray. |
