About RANSON, W.Va. - Hugo Rolando Rivas, 38, of Ranson, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson.

Born Jan. 25, 1964, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Julio R. Rivas of Rockville, Md., and Maria Cristina Birrillas Venzor of Houston.

He was a graduate of Garfield Senior High School, Woodbridge, Va., and of Montgomery County (Md.) Fire Academy.

He was a lieutenant with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Co. in Gaithersburg, Md. He was a member of the FEMA Team, helping at the Pentagon during the Sept. 11 attack and at Oklahoma City Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building Bombing in 1995.

He was a member of Bolivar (W.Va.) Pentecostal Church of Christ.

He was a member of International Association of Fire Fighters.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 12 years, Karen L. Bass Rivas; two daughters, Christina M. Kelly and Amber R. Rivas, both at home; three sons, Ronald A. Kelly of Ranson, Patrick W. Kelly, U.S. Navy, stationed in Great Lake, Ill., and Alex R. Rivas, at home; maternal grandmother, Tomasa Leiva of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Sylvia Saldana, Tammy Venzor and Isabel Venzor, all of Houston, and Glenda Burdette of Rockville; three brothers, Oscar Venzor, U.S. Army, Raul Rivas of Rockville, and Bobby Rivas of Maryland; one grandchild; nieces and nephews.
