Dexter Green - ISU loses another legend All-American tailback Green dies of cancer:- Wednesday, May 14, 2003

Iowa State's football program lost two legends Sunday.

On the same day that Ennis Haywood died in a Texas hospital, another of the top five rushers in Cyclones history died.

Dexter Green, an all-American tailback at ISU as a senior in 1978, died Sunday night in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 46 after a battle with cancer.

Green rushed for 3,437 yards in his college career from 1975-78, a total that went unbroken for 18 years and still ranks third on Iowa State's all-time rushing charts.

On the field, Green rewrote the Cyclone record book as a three-year starter from 1976-78 on Earle Bruce-coached Iowa State teams that finished 8-3, 8-4 and 8-4.

"He was at his best against the great teams," Bruce said. "I had many good backs over the year, but not all of them were at their best against the Nebraskas and Oklahomas like Dexter was. He was determined to be a success.''

Green stepped into the spotlight as a sophomore with the first of two straight 1,000-yard seasons, becoming one of seven players in Iowa State history to top 200 yards in a game when he ran for 214 yards against Missouri in 1976.

Green rushed for 1,074 yards that season as part of a strong group of underclassmen that included Mike Stensrud, Jeff Curry, Ray Hardee and Tom Boskey.

As a junior, Green led an Iowa State team quarterbacked by Davenport's Terry Rubley that was picked to finish sixth in the preseason Big Eight poll to a Peach Bowl berth.

The Woodbridge, Va., native ran for 1,240 yards and scored 15 touchdowns to earn all-conference honors.

Green replaced Mike Strachan as the Cyclones' all-time rusher in the fourth game of his senior season, gaining 102 yards in a 35-7 win over Drake.

He fell seven yards shy of becoming just the second back in Big Eight history to run for three straight 1,000-yard seasons when he finished with 993 yards as a senior, but Dexter did run for 148 yards in the Hall of Fame Bowl against Texas A&M in his final collegiate game.

The 5-foot-9, 171-pound Green went on to play one year for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League.

He graduated from Iowa State in 1980 and was inducted into the school's letterwinners hall of fame in 2000.

Green is survived by his wife, Betty, and two children, daughter Sabrina and son Dexter.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at the Diehl-Whittaker Funeral Home in Columbus.
