Candace Gaut Giger, 74, passed away Saturday June 5, 2021, from natural causes. Candace retired from the Knoxville News Sentinel in 2009 after a 41-year career as the Commercial Print Coordinator. Candace is proceeded in death by her lifelong love and husband, Jerry Giger. Candace leaves behind her daughter, Alicia Wallace Gehring, and son-in-law, Clayton Gehring, as well as her step-children, Kevin and Melissa Giger, and their children, Aaron and Noah, as well as Jerri Lynn Giger and Mike Howard and their son, Joe Howard. She also leaves behind SammyCat, her constant companion in her final years, who brought her comfort and contentment—he has found a new home with a good friend.
Candace found joy in her love of astronomy, flowers, and her cats. A lifelong rescuer of wayward cats that always seemed to find their way to her home; she never turned one away. Candace found a community of cat friends and spent her last years sharing stories and pictures and raising money for JF Richards' Rescue Cats (Da Adventures of Franklin and Butters).
Candace was always looking up to the stars, curious about what else was out there, certain that we are only a small part of a huge universe full of other life forms, most likely much smarter than us. Candace was never afraid to tell you her opinion and proudly stated her liberal and Blue beliefs in a Red State. Candace believed in the rights and equity for all people and always hoped for a future where that was the expectation and not the exception. Love is Love
