| About Me | After FCHS I worked for 10 at West Senaca Developmental Center. I started as a ward attendant and worked my way into the recreation department for several years. Then I took a year off and went into the VISTA Program and did community organizing in Missouri. When I came back to the Buffalo area I returned to WSDC and joined the Physical Therapy Department and spent four years learning and working with those wonderful folks. At one point during that time I got married to a fellow SWDC worker. It became clear very quickly that it was a mistake and I ended the relationship with an annulment. I did not have any children from that or any other relationships. I left my job after 10 years working for NY state and moved to Rochester NY to begin my involvement in working with clay at the Genessee Coop Pottery. While living there, I learned about the Empire State College program and decided it was time to earn a college degree. Most of my learning took place in L.A, California at the Feminist Studio Workshop. I created a program that combined my interests in art making and psychology and received a Bachelor’s degree in Art with a minor in Psychology I enjoyed California but got bored with the lack of variety in the weather and moved back to NY but chose to relocate to Ithaca. I’ve been here since 1980 and do not see myself moving anywhere else. One of the most popular bumper stickers about Ithaca is: “ Ithaca,10 square miles surrounded by reality,” That says it all for me. Since being here I’ve had two major career’s and several minor ones. I went to Syracuse University for an MSW and worked in the social work field for about ten years. Then I got trained as a dog groomer at the Rochester Institute of Dog Grooming and after a year working for someone else, I opened my own grooming shop - “ Claws & Paws Pet Grooming.” Grooming was my most loved work- it was similar to sculpting and so very satisfying. I loved the proceeds of bringing in a stinky, shaggy, smelly canine and having the pleasure and honor of transforming them into something beautiful and soft and happy. I especially loved to see the faces of my customers when their dogs were returned to them. My only regret is that I didn’t discover that work in my 20’s rather then my 50’s. I kept my shop open for about 12 years and retire in 2011. I live in senior housing in downtown Ithaca. My partner of 11 years, Joan lives next door in the complex.
