About Me | Growing up in Fridley and school experiences are pleasant memories for me. We lived in an era that I believe was exceptional. Along with those pleasant memories however there are plenty of things I remember that I did and acted like that I am ashamed of. I can identify with George Bernard Shaw: “Youth is the most beautiful thing in this world—and what a pity that it has to be wasted on children!” The three years in the Army following high school were also an exceptional time of my life. The order and discipline I experienced during that period was life changing. It was during those years in the Army that I became acquainted with practicing Christians. This was a foreign thing to me. Those boys were serious about their relationship with Jesus. These peculiar folks challenged me but I maintained my distance so as not to give them too much opportunity. I persisted in my "fun" with my circle of friends, yet with some new convictions I'm not sure if there were some of this persuasion at Fridley, but I am sorry that I missed out on this influence earlier of the "Way, the Truth and the Life". Not a total loss, just some delay After a year or so in Texas, and another year or so in Germany, back to Fridley. Loading UPS trailers, Anoka Ramsey, and building a cedar strip canoe occupied my time before heading to Ely, MN With a new outlook on learning, my experience at Vermillion Community College became the next significant influence in my life. New friends, a great campus, and more of those pesky, peculiar Christians. A two year degree turned into a third year of pre-engineering. Never imagined navigating Calc3 after dropping out of high school trig. Here I met a girl and here I knew there was more to life. Those peculiar friends became some of my better friends. My room mate called them the God Squad. The bar scene was gradually abandoned for pizza and soda with friends in the living room scene. Summer of '88 was a 1000 mile bicycle trip to Maine. Is God real? This was a trip dedicated to finding out. It was an amazing 45 days. Coincidences or divine intervention? Ask, Seek, Knock. After a detailed description of my life tendencies that he couldn't have known about, the traveling evangelist asked us to bow our heads and raise a hand if "you desire to accept Jesus as your savior and Lord". I couldn't deny the calling that was so direct to my heart. The folks at Ely Baptist Church were added to my new acquaintances. It turns out several of my instructors were members there. My Calculus teacher became my mid-week, after class, Bible instructor. The girl I met joined me in the weekly visits to church. Choosing to follow Jesus was challenging and changing our relationship. Michele and I were baptized in Eagles Nest lake in May of 1989. Back to Fridley. U of M Summer School lasted two weeks. I proposed to Michele at the Moore Lake Bus Stop after our memorable final bus trip home together from school. Off to work. Awkward announcement to the parents of our plan to get married. How are you going to provide? Where are you going to live? Faith in God for the outcome was not well received. The western suburbs became familiar territory as the City of Excelsior became my employer, a rental/room mate in Minnetonka became my housing, and Excelsior Covenant became my new church Family. Michele shared an apartment with a girlfriend in Fridley and would come to Minnetonka for church on weekends. A wedding was planned for the end of March. So much to look forward to. God is good! Time flies when you're having fun. March 31, 1990 came quickly. A beautiful Spring day. I asked the pastor to include a salvation message. I wanted my friends to have the same opportunity I had. A great honeymoon at the end of the Gunflint Trail. A New job at the City of Waconia. A New house to rent. A new life in a God ordained relationship with my forever friend. Not perfect, but by God's grace, a long way from what I once was. "But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." 1Cor 2:9 Lydia 1992. Moved to Wisconsin 1993. Anna 1993. Ben 1995. Leah 1998. Levi 2007. Daniel 2008. "His lovingkindness is everlasting and His faithfulness to all generations." Psalm 100:5 How about you? If you are reading this, there is no such thing as too late. This isn't about living a perfect life. I certainly haven't. It is about knowing the perfect creator and giver of life. Do you know Jesus as Lord and Savior? Is he the captain of your soul? My life is a result of his Grace. I'm still a misfit of my own doing, but He is my hope and my redeemer. Today is the day of salvation. Make him yours while it is still called today. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8 That is the sum of my story and my hope for whosoever will. L...(read more) |
