Life
After attending US Army Basic Training in the Summer of 1986 and graduating Page High School, I went to military training at FT Sam Houston in the Summer of 1987. Once I completed that I came back to attend MTSU as first a Business Admin Major and then eventually I changed to History/English Major/Minor. The math was too hard in Business Admin :-)
My main goal of college was to complete my degree obviously but mainly to get commissioned as an Army Officer from College ROTC. I finally achieved the Commissioning goal in May 1990 and graduated MTSU on the "5 year plan" in August 1992 (see above comments about Math). While at MTSU I met my wife, Danielle, and we were married in August 1991 and have been married for 15 wonderful years. Our first years together were spent travelling around the country with the US Army. Our duty stations included Ft Bliss, TX, FT Campbell, KY, Quantico MARINE Corps Base, Quantico VA (just outside D.C.) and FT Bragg, NC. My first beautiful girl, Carys, was born in 1995 while stationed at Quantico, VA. My second girl, Tomi, was born while I was stationed at FT Bragg, NC in 1999. It was after having a family that my career goals changed somewhat. I was deploying very often and was spending too much time away from my family so I decided to leave the Active Duty US Army and to move back home to TN. This has been a decision that I have been thankful for every day since.
I went to work as a civilian for the first time in my adult life but found the transition rewarding because I could see my family at night and actually have a life besides work. Since leaving Active Duty in May 2000, I have worked for Ozburn-Hessey Logistics Company and Flextronics International as an Operations Manager and Corporate Trainer. Once I left the Active US Army, I still wanted to be involved with the military so I joined the TN Army National Guard in 2000.
In the Spring of 2003 I was notified that my Army National Guard unit was being alerted for deployment to Kosovo. As a result I was offered a full time Army National Guard job as a deployment project officer to coordinate the zillion details of deploying multiple units around the world. In February 2004 my unit was notified that we weren't going to Kosovo but now were going to Iraq along with over 3000+ other fellow Tennesseeans. In June of 2004 I shipped off to lovely Camp Shelby MS to spend almost 6 months training for preparation for duty in Iraq.
We arrived in Iraq in November 2004 and spent the next year hunting terrorists, surviving each day and doing our mission to help get the country back on its feet. Without getting into a political discussion, the TRUTH is not what you are seeing on CNN or any other 30 second news clip. There are thousands of good things happening everyday and lives being saved/touched/changed for the betterment of their country.
But anyway, I returned home in November 2005 to my wonderful wife and kids and have went back to work full time for the National Guard Headquarters in Nashville, TN. My hobbies are web surfing, trading stock and spending some time outdoors hunting with my German Shorthair Pointer, aka Jack.
Last August the Class of '87 held its' 20 Year Reunion and hopefully everyone had a good time. It was a lot of work but was worth every bit of it as we got to come back together for a couple of evenings and reconnect with each other. There will be a 25 Year Reunion Planned for 2012 so stay tuned for details. :-)
