John Retherford
Class of 1962
John Retherford is an exceptional leader in the city of Franklin. He has exceeded the expectations of what a teacher, coach, and citizen of Franklin should model for their community. He is a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is a valuable member of the Franklin community and has proven himself time and time again through his hard work and years of dedication to Franklin City School District. I am nothing less of honored to nominate him for the Hall of Fame. The dates below are proof of his dedication to the Franklin community and are as close to the actual year (as possible) and defined to the best of my current knowledge.
1962—John graduated from Franklin High School.
Teaching Career
1966—John was a substitute teacher for a 4th grade class (Mrs. Neumeister’s class).
Fall1966—John was hired to teach 4th grade.
1967—John taught 5th grade at Gerke Elementary.
1968—John moved to the Jr. High, where he taught until he retired in 1996.
*He taught Ohio History, American History, and also taught some Science, Health, and Math. While at the Jr. High, he was the attendance officer for two years then decided his heart really was in the classroom with the students; thus moving back to the classroom.
Coaching Career
1967-1968—John coached PeeWee football.
1969-1984—John coached Jr. High boys’ basketball.
197?—John coached golf two different times.
**At one time, John coached high school girls’ basketball, soccer, and softball!
1984-1985—John started coaching girls’ basketball at the high school.
1985—John coached the first girls’ soccer team (which was also the first year for the program). He actually started the girls’ soccer program and took them to an MML League Championship in 1986.
1986—John ended his softball coaching career, (still coaching basketball and soccer).
1987—John ended his soccer coaching career, (still coaching basketball).
1996—John retired from teaching at Franklin Jr. High and started coaching 8th grade girls’ basketball.
2003-2004—John retired from coaching the 8th grade girls’ basketball team after coaching them for seven years.
As of this time, I do not have any personal contact information for the following people, however; the three people listed are well known to the Franklin community and would be good resources for verification of the story of Mr. John Retherford. The athletic office should also have his records on file.
1) Dr. Richard Chamberlain
2) Mr. Tom Benjamin
3) Ms. Stephanie Credit
4) Mr. Marvin Sands
5) Mr. Dave Creech
Thank you for your time!
